About Us
In the early 1940’s Howard William Guth and his wife Doris began operating a guiding business in what is now the Frank Church River of no Return Wilderness in Central Idaho. They offered guided hunting and fishing trips and based their business out of Stanley Idaho. Most of the destinations for postwar hunters and fishermen were tent camps and back-country lodges they’d built or maintained throughout the area. In the early days, access was usually on horseback and by pack strings of mules; and then later, guests arrived by bush planes to remote gravel airstrips where they began their guided adventures. With the help of their son’s, Norman and Bill Jr., the operation expanded to a full-service lodge on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. No access by road to the Middle Fork was available at the time so, Bill and Norm learned to fly and ferried guests and supplies from Salmon and Challis Idaho to the Middle Fork. Our family was among the first to begin offering guided rafting tours down the Middle Fork River and had the honor of taking Jimmy Carter on a raft trip while he was President of the United States in 1987. Norman and his wife Kaye continued the guiding and rafting business with their son’s Martin and Merlin. they moved to the Main Salmon and operated out of what is now known as the River of No return Lodge in the Wilderness northwest of Salmon Idaho. In 1995, we moved to Alaska and built a new lodge on the Iliamna River. Since then, the Guth family has offered fishing trips in Bush Alaska with access to Bristol Bay and West Cook Inlet. Marty’s sons, Kenny, Anthony and Brad are also active in the guiding business which makes the Guth’s guiding legacy stretch over 4 generations 78 years of serving the hunting and fishing public. Marty’s son Kenny is now attending dental school but he and his wife Karina, along with their 4 children, continue their service during the summer with Brad and Anthony as we keep the family business open to the sportsmen and women of the 21st century. Our Team | ||
